Williams Finally Kill Off Speculation About Perez Joining In 2021

It was recently reported that Sergio Perez was poised to replace George Russell at Williams.

Ahead of last weekend’s Portuguese Grand Prix, amid speculation that George Russell was set to be replaced by Sergio Perez at Williams, acting team principal Simon Roberts added credence to these claims by refusing to confirm the team’s driver line-up for 2021.

Roberts has now apologised for the “confusion” he caused and has confirmed that George Russell and Nicholas Latifi will remain at Williams next year.

“I probably caused a bit of confusion last week, I’m sorry about that. We didn’t really want to comment on the driver position.

“But as George said, Claire [Williams] made the announcement earlier this year, nothing has changed.

“This is our driver line-up for this year and next year. We’re very happy with them, and we look forward to working with them in a continued way,” Roberts added.

This comes as a potential blow to Perez, who lost his 2021 seat at Racing Point to Sebastian Vettel and had been linked with a move to Williams.

The Mexican’s only potential options now are to join Haas, though Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin are favourite to land the two vacant seats, or replace Alex Albon at Red Bull.
