Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes’ Formula 1 team, has openly declared Max Verstappen as his top choice to fill the vacancy left by Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025.
However, Wolff also mentioned having other candidates in mind for this pivotal role within the team.
Mercedes is eyeing an opportunity to recruit Verstappen amidst the current uncertainties plaguing his tenure with Red Bull, highlighted by internal tensions and a somewhat strained relationship with the team’s management.
Wolff’s interest in Verstappen became evident during a discussion with the driver’s father in Bahrain, signaling a potential shift in alliances despite the fierce competition witnessed in 2021.

In an interview with Fox Sports in Australia, Wolff expressed his desire for a collaboration with Verstappen, acknowledging the timing for such a move remains uncertain.
He praised Verstappen’s performance but refrained from diminishing the prospects of other drivers.
Wolff emphasized the importance of the team’s development efforts and the positive impact it could have on George Russell, another Mercedes driver with championship aspirations.
Wolff candidly admitted that even a talent like Verstappen would face challenges with the current Mercedes car, underscoring the team’s focus on vehicle improvement rather than solely relying on driver skill.
The decision on Hamilton’s successor is not expected soon, with Wolff indicating a thorough evaluation process throughout the summer.
The array of choices spans from emerging talents to seasoned veterans, reflecting Mercedes’ open-minded approach to filling the vacant seat.
