Initially leading from pole position, his chances of winning his 10th consecutive F1 race were dashed as his car began to emit smoke shortly after the race began, allowing Carlos Sainz to overtake him easily.
The situation worsened when one of Verstappen’s brakes ignited, forcing him to retire early.
A moment of visible frustration was captured between Verstappen and a mechanic, where Verstappen seemed to criticize the situation as “stupid.”

Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, later clarified the incident, highlighting Verstappen’s respectful demeanor towards the team despite the setback.
Horner praised Verstappen for his grace under pressure, acknowledging the shared disappointment and the importance of learning from the experience.
He noted the team’s exceptional record of avoiding mechanical failures over the past two years and stressed the value of understanding the issue to prevent future occurrences.
Despite the unfortunate DNF, Horner pointed out that Verstappen still leads the championship, emphasizing the lessons to be drawn from the incident.
Verstappen himself provided insight into the technical difficulties, revealing that the brakes on one wheel had malfunctioned from the start, likening it to “driving with the handbrake on.”
He shared his bewilderment during a pitstop attempt amidst the car’s fire, questioning the decision given the circumstances.
The team managed to extinguish the fire and replace the other three wheels, but it was soon determined that the damage was beyond repair, ending Verstappen’s race early.
