‘This stupid guy’: Carlos Sainz fumes at Nicholas Latifi

Carlos Sainz and Nicholas Latifi tripped over each other during practice at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Carlos Sainz was less than impressed with Nicholas Latifi in the second practice session ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix after the Williams driver held up the Ferrari.

The Hungaroring in Budapest is known for its tight, twisty and narrow nature, and has often been labelled ‘Monaco without the barriers.’

As a result, it is easy for drivers to trip over each other during practice sessions which, from the perspective of spectators, is a very forgivable and understandable thing to happen.

This is the case for the drivers too, but only after they have gotten out of the car. As Sainz was traversing Turn Four in Mogyorod, he encountered a slow-moving Latifi, meaning that he had to back out on the exit the fast, blind apex of the uphill corner, and this compromised his run into the right of Five.

“Traffic with this stupid guy, this Williams,” said an irritated Sainz on the radio.

The 27-year-old had gone fastest in the opening session on Friday, just over a tenth of a second clear of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, with team-mate Charles Leclerc behind in third.

The Monegasque topped the second hour as Lando Norris slipped in between the two Ferrari drivers, while his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo set the fifth fastest lap time.

Verstappen dropped further back to fourth in the second hour, while his team-mate Sergio Perez ended FP1 and FP2 sixth and ninth in the two sessions respectively.

The Mexican was seven tenths of a second adrift of his team-mate in both sessions, so he will need an improvement going into Saturday’s qualifying session, which could well be a wet one.

Latifi, meanwhile, ended the first hour last behind Alfa Romeo stand-in Robert Kubica and six tenths behind team-mate Alex Albon, before climbing to P18 in FP2 as Albon dropped to 20th.
