Team Boss Not Sure Schumacher Can Make It Into F1 ‘On Merit Alone’

Carlin said David Schumacher is around three years away from an “F1 opportunity.”

David Schumacher, son of ex-F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, competed in the FIA Formula Three Championship this year.

He ended the season 28th in the standings and has never won a single-seater series before, but Trevor Carlin, the man in charge of the team Schumacher is racing with, believes he could make it into F1 due to his contacts and surname.

Specifically, Carlin said he doesn’t want to speculate on whether or not David Schumacher can make it into Formula One “on merit alone.”

“David, in reality, will be three years away from an F1 opportunity, and he’s got to perform and have the roll of the dice when there’s a seat available,” Carlin said in a recent interview.

“I wouldn’t like to say whether he can make it on merit alone but if he keeps improving as a driver, with his name and contacts, I would say it’s possible,” he added.

Meanwhile, his cousin, Mick Schumacher, currently leads the Formula Two standings and will almost certainly be on the F1 grid next year.
