Former Haas title sponsor Rich Energy has claimed that ex-F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone played a role in their apparent upcoming return to Formula One.

In a tweet posted on Sunday, the energy drink brand said: “A huge thank you to the king of F1 for being such a great supporter of our founder William Storey & for backing us.

“Our return to Formula One due in no small part to the business genius of Bernie Ecclestone,” Rich Energy added.

It’s unclear what exactly they mean by Ecclestone “backing” them and playing a role in their alleged return to F1, but the tweet was accompanied with a picture of the former F1 supremo and Storey.

On Friday, Rich Energy claimed it will have “major news” next week.

Last month, the energy drink brand claimed that it will be returning to Formula One this year.

“F1 incoming. The best energy drink in the world mounting the greatest comeback since Lazarus. Premium British performance,” Storey wrote in a tweet.

Following this announcement, Formula1News.co.uk reached out to a number of teams for comment on the possibility of them partnering up with Rich Energy.

Williams flatly denied being in talks with them about a potential sponsorship deal, while another team which didn’t want to be named also insisted it hadn’t been in contact with Rich Energy.

The Haas F1 Team didn’t respond to a request for comment on the matter.
