Mick Schumacher joined Mercedes at the start of the 2023, taking on the important reserve driver role, tasked with aiding the team’s development behind the scene.
While following in his father’s footsteps by signing with the Silver Arrows, Schumacher’s introduction to the legendary Formula 1 team has thrown up a few surprises.
“It’s also been fascinating working with Lewis [Hamilton] and George [Russell],” Schumacher said.
“It’s an interesting period for me as I get to look over and work with two fantastic drivers, which you don’t always get to do.

“I’ve learned a lot about what’s important in terms of approaching race weekends; I feel like I’ve already gained so much knowledge to add to my skillset.
“I didn’t think I would have learned and gained so much so early into my role.”
“As a driver, you usually do not get to hear what is going on between all the engineers while you are out on the track, so listening in during the sessions has been extremely interesting.
“I was quite shocked at the season opener in Bahrain, I did not expect the sheer amount of exchange that happens.
“You don’t know what you’re missing until you are actually part of it.
Schumacher has been spotted at all three races of the season, with Mercedes confident that he could step into the car at a moment’s notice should either Hamilton or Russell be unavailable.

Back at home, the 24-year-old is responsible for working in the simulator to help the team shape the development of the W14, as Mercedes look to get back in the title fight.
Currently, Mercedes is sat in P3 in the Constructors’ race, with less than half the points of the title leaders Red Bull.
While Mercedes secured their first podium of the season in Australia, it was clear that they aren’t yet able to compete against Red Bull for the victory, as Max Verstappen dominated the race from lap 12 until the chequered flag.
