Additionally, the Dutch newspaper’s sources told them that Hamilton’s demands for a pay rise is another bone of contention, as several other media outlets have reported in recent weeks. approached Mercedes for comment on its reported reluctance to commit to a multi-year extension with Hamilton, but the Silver Arrows were unable to confirm nor deny these rumours.

In a statement, the Mercedes F1 Team told this publication that they “don’t comment on speculation and rumours, and there are a lot of them about right now.”

Continuing, they stressed that “this shouldn’t be understood as any kind of indication that De Telegraaf is correct; it’s simply our house policy not to engage with speculation.”

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ apparent struggle to agree a new deal has prompted speculation that George Russell potentially has a chance of replacing the seven-time World Champion at the team next season.

However, in December, team principal Toto Wolff insisted that a deal will be agreed “sooner or later” and said the only reason a contract extension wasn’t secured during the 2020 season is because they had other priorities to manage.
