The internal battle at Racing Bulls could become one of the most compelling storylines of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with both Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad potentially competing for future opportunities within Red Bull’s driver programme.
Television analyst Naomi Schiff believes the pair may end up fighting each other aggressively throughout the year as they attempt to position themselves for a potential promotion to Red Bull’s main team.
Both drivers currently have contracts that expire at the end of the 2026 season, meaning their performances this year could play a decisive role in determining their long-term futures within the organisation.
Schiff suggested the rivalry could intensify dramatically as the season progresses, especially if either driver emerges as a stronger contender for a coveted seat alongside Max Verstappen.
“But then for wildest prediction, I’m kind of split between two thoughts.”
“I’m split between Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad start rubbing wheels because they want that seat at Red Bull, which we don’t know is up for grabs.”
Lindblad Impresses On Formula 1 Debut
While the season is still in its early stages, Lindblad already delivered an eye-catching performance during his Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix.
The 18-year-old British driver scored points in his very first race, finishing eighth after briefly running as high as third during the opening lap of the race.
His aggressive start and ability to compete against established drivers quickly drew praise from several commentators, including former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle.
Brundle highlighted Lindblad’s composure when battling Max Verstappen during the race, noting that the rookie appeared comfortable racing against one of the sport’s most dominant champions.
Meanwhile Lawson endured a far more difficult race weekend after struggling with a poor launch from the grid that dropped him toward the back of the field early in the race.
He narrowly avoided contact with Franco Colapinto during the chaotic opening moments, further compounding an already difficult start to the season.
Lawson Still Searching For Form
Reports suggest Lawson has struggled to adapt to the new 2026 technical Regulations, leaving him searching for confidence and consistency in the early races of the championship.
The New Zealand driver is hoping to stabilise his career this season following a difficult period that included losing his Red Bull seat only two races into the previous campaign.
Failing to outperform his rookie teammate could present further challenges for Lawson’s long-term prospects within the Red Bull driver development system.
Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes Lindblad already demonstrated stronger pace during the Australian Grand Prix weekend, potentially placing Lawson under immediate pressure.
Red Bull Seat Remains Uncertain
Despite the speculation surrounding a possible Red Bull promotion, Schiff acknowledged that a vacancy at the senior team is far from guaranteed in the near future.
Max Verstappen has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain in Formula 1 for several more seasons, meaning his position within the team appears secure for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile Isack Hadjar only recently stepped up to the Red Bull lineup and delivered an impressive qualifying performance on debut before retiring from the race due to a mechanical problem.
“Hadjar was doing a great job.”
Schiff nevertheless believes the rivalry between Lawson and Lindblad could become a defining subplot within the 2026 season as both drivers attempt to prove themselves as the strongest candidate within the Red Bull talent pipeline.
“But I think the two of them are going to be fighting each other to be top dog at RB. So that’s going to be worthy of watching.”
