Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated debut for Ferrari could be delayed and moved from the team’s Fiorano test track as Ferrari reportedly activates a “Plan B” due to potential bad weather.
Hamilton, who ended his legendary partnership with Mercedes to join Ferrari in 2025, is set to begin his Scuderia journey in January. However, Italian publication Auto Racer claims Hamilton’s first drive in a Ferrari may shift to Mugello or Imola if conditions at Fiorano prove unsuitable.
The British driver, turning 40 next month, is expected to drive either Ferrari’s 2022 or 2023 car, as F1 rules restrict private testing with cars less than two years old. His debut is tentatively scheduled for January 21 or 22, but adverse weather could force a reschedule.
Ferrari traditionally kicks off pre-season preparations at Fiorano, where past drivers, including Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz, have tested legacy cars. However, the team is preparing for alternatives to ensure Hamilton’s debut goes smoothly.
Adding intrigue to Hamilton’s move, the seven-time World Champion has reportedly already visited Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters ahead of officially joining on January 1. His secret trip mirrors that of Carlos Sainz, who visited Ferrari in 2020 before transitioning from McLaren.
Ferrari’s 2025 car, codenamed Project 677, is slated for a February 19 launch. The car’s design includes updates influenced by Hamilton’s driving style, such as a pullrod front suspension, aiming to optimize airflow and downforce.
With Hamilton’s arrival marking a new chapter for Ferrari, the team is keen to document his first on-track moments, making his debut a critical milestone for both the driver and the iconic team. Whether it happens at Fiorano or elsewhere, fans are eager to witness Hamilton’s first step in red.
