Lando Norris jokes about McLaren decision

Lando Norris' podium at the British GP on Sunday was his first at his home race.

Lando Norris put on one of his greatest displays to-date in his Formula 1 career on Sunday at the British Grand Prix, as the McLaren driver stormed to his first podium of 2023 in front of his home crowd.

Starting from second, Norris sensationally overtook Max Verstappen into the opening corner to lead the Grand Prix, something which resulted in an almighty roar from the British crowd.

Unsurprisingly, he did fall back behind the reigning World Champion a few laps later, with Norris having put up no fight.

The McLaren driver settled into second brilliantly though, whilst team-mate Oscar Piastri was following closely behind in third.

Norris and Piastri both looked very comfortable, with neither driver having been at threat of being overtaken.

That was until a late Safety Car, which allowed multiple drivers to pit for the first-time in the race.

Norris was one of the drivers who made their pit-stop when the Safety Car was summoned, whilst Piastri pitted prior to it being required.

It meant Piastri lost third to Lewis Hamilton, as the seven-time World Champion inherited the position due to pitting at the start of the Safety Car period.

Hamilton ended up claiming third with Piastri just under a second behind in fourth, whilst Norris claimed second.

Norris certainly claimed his podium the hard way though, as McLaren fitted him with the hardest compound for the final stint of the race.

The 23-year-old had actually asked for Softs, a compound which Hamilton was fitted with.

Norris complained whilst behind the Safety Car that he’d been put on the Hard compound, after expecting Hamilton to have the grip to sweep past.

The McLaren driver defended incredibly though from a rapid Hamilton, to maintain second for the Woking-based team.

Norris joked in parc ferme that his team were “beginners” for fitting him with the Hard compound, something which definitely made the end of his race much more difficult.

“Thanks to the team, they’ve done an amazing job…” Norris said in his post-race interview.

“They put me hard tyres, I’m not sure why. Still are beginners in some things,” he joked.
