Helmut Marko Admits Yuki Tsunoda Might Be Handed Red Bull Drive

Tsunoda, who joined Red Bull's junior team in 2021 with Honda's backing, is now the longest-serving junior driver for the team and has already secured his spot for a fifth season in F1 in 2025.

Yuki Tsunoda may finally get the chance to drive a Red Bull F1 car, as Helmut Marko has hinted that Red Bull has “some plans” for him at the post-season Abu Dhabi test.

Tsunoda, who joined Red Bull’s junior team in 2021 with Honda’s backing, is now the longest-serving junior driver for the team and has already secured his spot for a fifth season in F1 in 2025.

With Sergio Perez struggling at Red Bull, having missed the podium in 14 consecutive races and currently sitting eighth in the Drivers’ standings, Tsunoda is eager to have a shot at the Red Bull seat.

Although he initially saw off competition from Daniel Ricciardo, a new rival emerged in the form of Liam Lawson, who replaced Ricciardo for the final six races of the season. Lawson scored points in Austin and was praised by Marko as a “man for the future.”

When asked about his chances of driving for Red Bull, Tsunoda said, “I hope so. I thought when Daniel was my team-mate, it was kind of like that. But so far, it seems not. But hopefully after Daniel, things happen. Hopefully they change their mind.”

Honda has also advocated for Tsunoda, with a direct request to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner to let him test the RB20.

Koji Watanabe, head of Honda’s racing activities, stated, “Regarding Tsunoda, our goal is for him to work hard and secure a seat at Red Bull Racing. We believe he has the talent. Of course, driver decisions are ultimately up to the team, but as a partner, we’ve strongly requested that Tsunoda be given the chance to drive and test in a Red Bull car.”

Watanabe also mentioned that he has spoken to Horner, who has not ruled out the possibility.

Marko confirmed that Red Bull is considering the plan, with Tsunoda potentially driving the RB20 at the post-season Abu Dhabi test.
