Haas to announce 2024 driver line-up

Both Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg are on deals which expire at the end of 2023 at Haas.

Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg are set to be retained by Haas for 2024, with the American side currently enjoying a very positive season.

Hulkenberg in particular has been exceptional in his returning season to the paddock, after being signed to replace Mick Schumacher.

Team principal Guenther Steiner opted for an experienced line-up for 2023, having trialled young drivers in 2021 and 2022.

2021 saw Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin complete their rookie campaign, in what was Haas’ worst season in F1.

Following the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Mazepin was dropped and Magnussen was brought back to the team he departed at the end of 2020.

Magnussen’s experience saw him lead the American side, whilst Schumacher struggled.

As a result, Haas opted to go with two experienced drivers for this season, something which has proven to be absolutely the correct decision.

Despite having not competed in a full season since 2019, Hulkenberg has shown rapid pace, especially in qualifying.

He’s been a regular figure in Q3 this season and currently sits on nine points, putting him 14th in the Drivers’ Championship.

Magnussen hasn’t quite shown the sort of pace that Hulkenberg has boasted, with him having scored just two points.

However, Haas’ race pace has often been an issue this season, something which has been a trend for all the Ferrari-powered teams.

Haas sit eighth in the Constructors’ Championship and are in the fight for seventh with the likes of Williams and Alfa Romeo, in what would be their best result since 2018.

It makes complete sense then for the side to retain both Magnussen and Hulkenberg for next season, something which appears set to happen.

“Having had their hands burned trialling an inexperienced line-up that brought funding, Haas have flipped back to experience,” F1.com’s Lawrence Barretto reported.

“It’s paying dividends with the American team in the fight to finish seventh in what would be their best finish since 2018.

“It’s almost certain they will name an unchanged line-up for 2024.”

Talks with Magnussen are “ongoing” and “believed to be very positive”, whilst a new deal is supposedly being discussed currently with Hulkenberg as well.
