Formula 1 could return to Turkey this year, with the F1 Commission set to discuss plans to replace the 2021 Canadian Grand Prix with a race in Istanbul due to the third wave of COVID-19 infections in the North American country, RaceFans has reported.

The Nürburgring is another venue that could host the seventh-round of the F1 Championship should the Canadian GP be cancelled, the publication added.

When approached for comment by Formula1News.co.uk on these reports, Formula 1 said it could confirm that an F1 Commission meeting would be taking place today but couldn’t specify what will be discussed.

Earlier this month, Formula 1 denied reports that this year’s Canadian and Brazilian GPs were facing cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Both of these suggestions are wrong,” an F1 spokesperson said in a brief statement to Formula1News.co.uk when approached for comment on the matter.

For the time being, this year’s Canadian Grand Prix remains scheduled to go ahead on 13 June.
