The Formula 1 silly season is in full swing, with Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen sitting at the centre of a swirling driver swap story.
Both drivers are contracted to their respective teams, McLaren and Red Bull, through to the end of 2028, making any near-term switch appear highly unlikely.
Reports gained traction after the 2026 British Grand Prix, where Verstappen crashed out and Piastri finished a disappointing eleventh place outside the points.
Brazilian outlet Grande Premio fuelled the fire by claiming the Australian is dissatisfied and wants to leave McLaren at the end of the 2026 season.
The report stated: “Dissatisfied with McLaren, Oscar Piastri wants to leave the team at the end of 2026…If this happens, it will open up the possibility of a straightforward swap, with the Australian moving to Red Bull and Max Verstappen taking his place at McLaren alongside Lando Norris.”
Verstappen’s own future at Red Bull is equally uncertain, with a performance-based exit clause reportedly active from the summer break through until October.
Red Bull principal Laurent Mekies has publicly dismissed the idea of Verstappen leaving, telling media at the Austrian GP: “I’m not asking Max every week if he’s going to stay…Max has made clear to us that he wants to continue with the team. It’s equally clear that he needs a fast car for him to be happy with the team.”
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown was asked directly at Silverstone about reported talks between McLaren and Verstappen’s management, to which he flatly replied: “They’re rumours? No conversations.”
Brown did not shut the door entirely on Verstappen’s long-term appeal, but made clear his current priorities in characteristically candid fashion during the Friday press conference at Silverstone.
“I usually don’t talk about my dinners but last night I had dinner with Nigel Mansell, which was really cool,” Brown said. “He’s won this race a bunch. I’m very happy with my two racing drivers, Lando and Oscar, and I think any time a name like Max is thrown around everyone gets pretty excited. Four-time World Champion, but very happy with our driver line-up.”
When pushed to clarify that any Verstappen move to McLaren was not imminent, Brown gave a simple one-word confirmation: “Correct.”
With Mercedes reportedly turning down Verstappen over contract demands and Ferrari settled with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, McLaren remains theoretically the most attractive option available to the Dutchman.
Piastri himself has been forthright in pushing back against the exit narrative, insisting his relationship with McLaren remains in excellent health heading into the remainder of the season.
“I’ve got a contract in place, multiple reassurances that the team are very happy with me and I’m very happy with the team,” said the 25-year-old ahead of the Silverstone weekend.
“For me, I’m very happy where I am and very happy with the situation I’m in. Just trying to continue the success that we’ve had in the last few years.”
For now, the reality is that both drivers remain committed to their teams on paper, and the rumour mill is moving considerably faster than the actual negotiations.
