Williams has officially confirmed its 2027 Formula 1 driver line-up, securing Carlos Sainz on a multi-year extension despite a deeply challenging current season.
The announcement arrives just one day after team-mate Alex Albon agreed a one-season extension, keeping the Thai-Briton at the Grove outfit for what will be his sixth year with the team.
Williams currently sit ninth in the constructors’ standings after 11 rounds of the 2026 season, having scored just 11 points and none from the last five races.
The 2027 campaign will mark Sainz’s third year at Williams, having joined from Ferrari where the Spaniard claimed four grand prix victories during his time with the Scuderia.
Sainz’s commitment is a significant statement of faith given how stark the contrast is with 2025, when his two podiums helped Williams finish fifth in the constructors’ championship, their highest position since 2017.
The British team entered the 2026 regulation cycle with an overweight car, and much of their development focus throughout the season has been directed at cutting that weight rather than aerodynamic progression.
Speculation had mounted that Sainz could seek a move away from Williams before the end of his contract, though his realistic alternatives were limited to other midfield competitors.
“I’m thrilled to announce my continued journey with the Williams F1 Team family,” said Sainz. “I truly believe in the people that form this team, both at the factory and at the race tracks, and the investments and hard work that are happening in the background.”
“We have what it takes to turn this around together. I’m as committed as I was on day one to helping get Williams back to where it belongs.”
The 31-year-old will be part of Williams’ milestone 50th season in Formula 1 in 2027, a team that has accumulated nine constructors’ titles, seven drivers’ championships, and 114 grand prix victories across its storied history.
Williams described the extension as reflecting “the trust both sides have built as Williams continues investing in all areas needed to challenge in F1 and add to its legacy.”
Team principal James Vowles was emphatic in his praise for Sainz’s contribution both on and off the track during their time together at the team.
“From the moment he joined, Carlos’ talent behind the steering wheel and dedication back at the factory have been extremely valuable for this project – working day in, day out with his engineers to find every millisecond,” said Vowles.
“He is a leader of this team, and I’m thrilled that he can see what’s possible as we continue to rebuild it.”
Vowles also reserved praise for the full driver pairing, expressing confidence in the combined strength Sainz and Albon bring to Williams heading into the new season.
“Along with Alex, I truly believe we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid, and a team capable of fighting for every ounce of performance together,” Vowles added.
