Mercedes has officially launched its latest Formula 1 car, the W16, as the team looks to bounce back in 2025 following an underwhelming 2024 season. The unveiling marks a significant turning point for the Silver Arrows, as they prepare for their first season in over a decade without Lewis Hamilton, who has made the switch to Ferrari.
With George Russell now leading the charge alongside highly-rated rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the team is banking on a fresh start to return to title contention. The W16 is set to hit the track for the first time in Bahrain for a shakedown run ahead of pre-season testing.
Aiming for Redemption After a Tough 2024
The past few years have been difficult for Mercedes, with Red Bull dominating the hybrid era thanks to the exceptional form of Max Verstappen. Despite occasional flashes of brilliance, the team has struggled with consistency, often falling behind in the development race.
Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the challenges but remains optimistic about the team’s chances in 2025.

“We anticipate a highly competitive season and recognize the necessity to perform at our highest level to contend for the title,” said Wolff.
This year, Mercedes is determined to close the gap to Red Bull and Ferrari, with the W16 expected to be a significant step forward from its predecessor.
Technical Changes and Key Upgrades
The W16 has been designed with a focus on rectifying weaknesses that plagued the previous models. According to Technical Director James Allison, the team has worked hard on improving the car’s balance, particularly in slow-speed corners and in maintaining optimal tire temperatures.
One of the biggest issues Mercedes faced last season was tire degradation, which often left them struggling in race conditions despite showing promising one-lap pace. Allison emphasized that these problems have been addressed in the W16.
“The areas that needed improvement were clear, and we’ve made those a priority. We’ve focused on performance in slow corners and ensuring the car is more consistent across different conditions,” Allison explained.
The team has also made aerodynamic refinements, which should provide better overall stability and downforce. While exact details remain under wraps, early indications suggest that the W16 will be a more well-rounded and predictable car than its predecessor.
A New Driver Lineup: Russell Steps Up, Antonelli Joins the Big League
With Lewis Hamilton’s departure, George Russell is now the undisputed team leader at Mercedes. Having already proven himself with a race win and multiple podium finishes, the Briton is eager to step into a more prominent role within the team.
“George has matured tremendously over the past few seasons, and we have full confidence in him leading the team,” Wolff stated.
Alongside Russell, Mercedes has placed its trust in Andrea Kimi Antonelli, an 18-year-old prodigy who has been part of the team’s junior program. Antonelli’s rapid rise through the junior ranks has been nothing short of spectacular, and many see him as a future world champion.
His promotion to Formula 1 marks a bold move by Mercedes, but Wolff believes the young Italian has what it takes to succeed.
“We have an exciting lineup to help us achieve our objectives. Both drivers have progressed through our junior programme, and that is a vindication of our commitment to both supporting and developing talent,” Wolff added.
Bahrain Shakedown and the Road Ahead
The W16 will get its first taste of track action during a shakedown run in Bahrain before pre-season testing officially begins. These early runs will be crucial in understanding the car’s behavior and making necessary adjustments ahead of the season opener.
With the regulations remaining largely stable for 2025 before a major overhaul in 2026, this season presents Mercedes with a real opportunity to climb back to the top. The team is confident that the W16 will bring them closer to Red Bull and Ferrari, but only time will tell if it’s enough to fight for the championship.
As the Bahrain Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Mercedes to see if their new car and new lineup can bring them back into contention. If the W16 delivers on its promise, 2025 could mark the beginning of a resurgence for the Silver Arrows.
