Tost: ‘Very Talented’ Tsunoda Will Join AlphaTauri in F1 Sooner or Later

It's likely Kvyat would have to leave the team if Tsunoda joined AlphaTauri in 2021.

Scuderia AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost has described Yuki Tsunoda as a “fantastic driver” and said he will race for the F1 team “sooner or later”.

In an interview with the Italian edition of Motorsport.com, Tost hailed the Japanese driver’s performance in Formula 3 last year and said he is continuing to develop as a driver in Formula 2 this season.

“First of all, Red Bull and Honda are supporting Tsunoda because he is a fantastic driver,” Tost said.

“He is a very talented driver, he has so many qualities that he showed in Formula 3 last year and that he is showing again this year.”

Continuing, Tost recalled some of Tsunoda’s impressive performances in challenging circumstances.

“I remember the race in Austria, when he ran in wet track conditions. He was at the top of the leaderboard, he was leading the race, but due to a radio failure he was called to the pits too late to make the pit stop.

“And anyway, he finished second. Then at Silverstone he won the race,” he said.

“He is still improving his performance, he is becoming more and more experienced and I expect to have him, sooner or later, in AlphaTauri, clearly.”

Honda powers Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri, and is likely to be pushing to get Tsunoda a seat in F1 with the junior team as soon as possible.

With teammate Pierre Gasly impressing so far this season, Russian driver Daniil Kvyat is the most likely of the two to make way for Tsunoda if he were to join the team next year.
