His last few years in F1 were extremely frustrating, as he was driving an uncompetitive McLaren which often wasn’t good enough to even make it into the top ten.
However, 2021 should see Fernando Alonso competing considerably higher up the field if Renault’s performance last season is anything to go by.
And, according to ex-F1 driver Adrian Campos, Alonso should even have a chance of winning races next season:
“With Fernando there is always a show,” Campos said.
“If he has a car that can come in fifth or sixth place, he will get podiums. If he has a car that can reach podiums, he will win races.
“In 2020, [Daniel] Ricciardo had podiums with Renault, so Fernando can win races,” the former F1 driver added.
Specifically, Ricciardo scored two podiums with Renault last year, while his team-mate, Esteban Ocon, took his maiden F1 podium in the penultimate grand prix of the season in Bahrain.
The team will race under the Alpine brand in 2021, and Alonso will be hoping he replicate the success he had during his first stint with Renault, when won the 2005 and 2006 Drivers’ Championships.
