‘Red Bull Really Has To Do It Themselves’: Alonso Insists He Won’t Help Verstappen Beat Hamilton

Fernando Alonso has said he always focuses on his own race and isn’t looking to unnecessarily interfere in the Championship battle.

Double F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has said Red Bull and Max Verstappen will need to defeat Sir Lewis Hamilton on their own, with the Spaniard saying his Alpine isn’t competitive enough for him to frequently battle his former team-mate.

His comments come hot on the heels of senior Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko suggesting that Alonso potentially wants to help Verstappen beat Hamilton this season.

“We know Alonso is not a big Hamilton fan, which we saw in Budapest,” the Austrian said, referencing the Spaniard’s fantastic defence against Hamilton in Hungary.

Asked for his thoughts on Dr Marko’s comments, Alonso said: “I read that, but I always run my own race.

“In Hungary, yes, we managed to fight Hamilton. But that was mainly due to the track. Mercedes and Red Bull are normally much too fast.

“Look at Monza, when Bottas started last and still finished on the podium. So of course, I like to fight with good drivers, but I think Red Bull really has to do it themselves this season,” he concluded.
