Red Bull Insist Sergio Perez’s Sakhir GP Win Won’t Impact Their Albon Verdict

Sergio Perez took his first-ever victory in Formula One at the Sakhir Grand Prix but he remains without an F1 drive next season.

With just a few days of the 2020 F1 season to go, Red Bull are still yet to announce who will be driving alongside Max Verstappen next year.

Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg have both been linked with a move to Red Bull Racing should the team choose to drop Alex Albon.

And, one would expect that Sergio Perez’s fantastic performance in Bahrain has strengthened his case, but Dr Helmut Marko, head of Red Bull’s driver development programme, has insisted that this is not the case.

“Sergio Perez’s victory in Bahrain has no influence on our decision,” Dr Marko said in an interview this week.

“We already knew the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates for the cockpit before that. After the last race in Abu Dhabi we will sit down and make the best possible decision,” the Austrian added.

Alex Albon had yet another disappointing race last weekend and, given the pace of his RB16 and the mistakes which ruined Mercedes’ race, he should have been fighting for the win.
