After being axed by Red Bull in the middle of the 2019 season, Pierre Gasly had a strong finish to the campaign with their sister team and then had his strongest season in Formula One in 2020.

Aside from his standout win at Monza, Gasly consistently scorned much-needed points for Scuderia AlphaTauri and firmly established himself as the team’s number one driver.

Despite being comprehensively outpaced by Max Verstappen when they were team-mates at Red Bull, Gasly believes he “would have a chance” against the Dutch ace now, though he thinks he still has room for further improvement.

“I think I would have a chance in the same car. But it’s much more complicated than that,” Gasly said in a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport.

“As I’ve shown this year I can do very well if I have the right car. I will continue to give everything to get that chance because my goal is to become a world champion. That’s what I will continue to work for.

“I was in Formula 1 in my second year then [in 2019 at Red Bull], and now I’m doing much better. Objectively, I am a better driver.

“I am more constant and have more experience, and in 2021 I expect to be even better. But there are still a lot of areas I can improve,” Gasly added.

Despite having such a strong season with AlphaTauri, Pierre Gasly was overlooked by Red Bull for the second seat alongside Verstappen.
