Max Verstappen’s girlfriend in hot water for political stance

Whilst double World Champion Max Verstappen was spotted partying with Lando Norris in Monaco, his girlfriend, Kelly Piquet, has come under fire on social media for supporting Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

A Presidential election is currently taking place in the South American country, with Bolsonaro having progressed to the next round of the election against Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who was President himself between 2003-2010.

Bolsonaro has come under huge criticism during his term in charge, following a disgraceful handling of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The President largely swept the pandemic under the carpet and essentially kept the country running like normal, despite thousands of deaths in the Latin country.

680,000 people have died from the pandemic in Brazil, with Bolsonaro having approved and promoted unproven treatments and cures.

He has also played a key role in the deeply saddening deforestation of the Amazon, which has reached a record high, 1,540 square miles were destroyed in the first six months of 2022 alone.

The far-right leader who has amassed a large movement dubbed ‘Bolsonaroism’, has also faced corruption investigations, after his family were found to have paid for 50 properties worth millions of dollars, with cash.

The liberal political has never been able to admit where the money has come from; however, the size of his following suggests that many don’t care.

However, a lot do care, with the Brazilian having caused unrest in the country.

He won Survival International’s Racist of the Year Award in 2019, with hate speech having returned during his term in charge.

Indigenous people, for which there are 305 tribes in the country, have been perhaps the biggest victims of Bolsonaro’s term in charge, with the President having gone out of his way to make their lives a living hell.

“The Indians do not speak our language, they do not have money, they do not have culture,” the President was quoted as saying, according to Survival International.

Piquet has shared her support for the white supremist, through resharing a story on her Instagram account.

The post that Piquet reshared explains that Bolsonaro doesn’t want his country to become like Argentina, Columbia, Venezuela and Nicaragua, who are all on the left side of politics.

The social media reaction has been one of disgust, with many hailing Piquet as a fascist for supporting the nationalist.

It’s not the first time the Piquet’s have suffered from somewhat political backlash, after her father, ex-F1 driver Nelson Piquet, was racist towards Lewis Hamilton on TV.
