Max Verstappen Could Replace Bottas At Mercedes In 2022

Just a matter of months ago, Verstappen extended his contract with Red Bull until the end of 2023.

Max Verstappen could part ways with Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2021 Formula One season, according to the De Telegraaf newspaper, which reports he has an exit clause in his active contract.

And, with Valtteri Bottas’ new contract only running for the 2021 season, the Dutchman could be looking to join Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in the hopes of having a more competitive car.

The exit clause in Verstappen’s new contract can only be activated if Red Bull fails to meet pre-agreed performance targets.

It’s unclear what these specific performance targets are, but Red Bull will undoubtedly be desperately hoping they can meet them to retain Verstappen.

The Dutch ace has retired from the last two races due to technical issues, and his RB16 has been unable to match the Mercedes W11 at the vast majority of circuits raced at so far this season.
