Marko Comments On Possibility Of Red Bull Poaching Russell From Mercedes

Senior Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has said that George Russell is “worth considering” if Mercedes decide not to run him in their second car alongside Sir Lewis Hamilton next year.

Russell is signed on a long-term deal to Mercedes, though he is currently effectively on loan to Williams.

He is in contention for the second Mercedes seat in 2022, but with the Silver Arrows offering him no guarantees, other teams are believed to be keeping an eye on Russell.

Dr Marko suggested that Red Bull would be interested in signing the young Brit, but he is doubtful that Mercedes would be willing to let a talent of his calibre simply walk away.

“Russell is certainly worth considering with the performances he is now showing at Williams,” Dr Marko said in an interview with Motorsport-Total.com.

“The only thing is, that’s so Utopian, because if Mercedes let him go, that would be such a faux pas, that I honestly can’t imagine it.”

Asked if Red Bull would be willing to offer Russell a seat, Dr Marko said that he believes this is not “relevant” as it is very likely he will be racing with Mercedes next year.
