Gerhard Berger, a former Ferrari driver, has outlined two significant challenges that Lewis Hamilton will face as he transitions to Ferrari for 2025.
The Austrian, who spent six seasons with Ferrari, believes Hamilton’s success will depend on his ability to overcome these hurdles and find new motivation.
Hamilton’s Two Key Issues at Mercedes
Berger identified two main reasons Hamilton struggled at Mercedes in recent seasons. The first was the lack of a consistently competitive car, and the second was the long tenure Hamilton spent at the same team.
“He has had two problems: the Mercedes has only been a winning car on exceptional occasions, and he has now been in the same team for so long that only a change of scenery will help,” Berger explained.

This move to Ferrari is not just a fresh start for Hamilton but also an opportunity for him to rediscover his drive. While Berger acknowledges that Hamilton could face tough competition from Charles Leclerc, he believes the change of environment may reignite his passion.
“I think Hamilton needs new motivation,” he said, adding that Ferrari’s culture and technical setup could give Hamilton the boost he needs.
Ferrari’s Potential for Success in 2025
Despite the challenges, Berger is optimistic about Ferrari’s prospects, particularly with team principal Fred Vasseur at the helm. “Ferrari was almost always fast last year, with a few slip-ups.
“I trust Fred Vasseur to get this volatility out of the system,” he said.
With the right leadership and a renewed motivation, Hamilton could still fight for that elusive eighth world title, potentially achieving a historic victory for Ferrari.
