Lewis Hamilton returns to his roots

Lewis Hamilton has committed to embarking on a mission to support young talent and diversity in racing after signing a new contract at Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton made a heartwarming return to his hometown of Stevenage, where he embarked on a mission close to his heart, aimed at improving opportunities for young individuals aspiring to work in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) industries.

Drawing upon his own childhood experiences and his illustrious career in motorsport, Hamilton participated in various activities in collaboration with his Mission 44 charity, working closely with the local council to promote positive change within the community.

Sharing his emotional journey on social media, Hamilton posted several images of himself at the location, accompanied by a heartfelt message urging his followers to cherish their origins.

His message resonated deeply as he encouraged everyone to “never forget” their humble beginnings.

“While I was back in Stevenage I stopped by the skatepark I grew up going to,” read the message. “It’s between the town centre where I learned to swim and the pond that I chased a duck into when I was six.

“I was only there for five minutes, and even in that short time all the memories came rushing back.

“It’s amazing how quickly you become that kid again.

“Never forget where you’re from, and make sure to go back there, if not physically then at least mentally.”

Speaking with BBC Breakfast about the driving force behind his latest endeavour, Hamilton expressed, “I remember vividly just how difficult it was when I was a kid.

“We want these kids – they are the future, there’s so much they can do but they need help.

“And it’s also breaking down some of the barriers that some of these young people are facing.

“I want to see my industry shift and be reflective of the outside world.”

Hamilton’s commitment to empowering young talent and promoting diversity in STEM fields aligns with his philanthropic efforts through Mission 44.

The charity, named after his racing number, is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of underprivileged individuals and communities, particularly focusing on education and equal opportunities.

Hamilton will have two more years to promote his mission in Formula 1 after signing an extension with Mercedes until 2025.

For the next two seasons, Hamilton will remain paired with George Russell who also extended his deal with Mercedes to the end of the current era of regulations.
