As soon as the cars crossed the finish line in Abu Dhabi and Max Verstappen was declared the 2021 F1 Driver’s Champion, a petition was launched to hand Sir Lewis Hamilton the title.
The petition, at the time of writing, has amassed over 14,000 signatures, showing fans’ dismay over the stewards’ decisions in the final laps of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Specifically, Hamilton fans were enraged by Michael Masi’s decision to only allow five of eight lapped cars to un-lap themselves.
Hamilton fans feel there was an injustice against the Brit, and some have opted to take matters into their own hands.
The FIA claimed that the ability to deploy and recall the Safety Car is ultimately given to the race director, and said Masi has the power to overrule written regulations. However, Hamilton fans are not buying it, and in the petition, the person who created it wrote:
“I believe that justice was not served on Sunday December 12, 2021 when the FIA stewards denied Lewis Hamilton of his win of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With less than one lap remaining, some lapped cars were allowed to pass the safety car, which does not comply with the rules of the F1 sport.

“If you are an advocate of justice, honesty and fairness, please sign this petition. Leaving this decision as it stands will send a very wrong message to youngsters and future racers.”
This strongly worded petition was titled: “Overturn the decision of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Lewis should be the winner.”
