Jackie Stewart reveals George Russell and Lando Norris dream

Both George Russell and Lando Norris will be hoping to win a world championship in the near future.

The 2018 Formula 2 championship brought Formula 1 a real golden generation, with George Russell, Lando Norris and Alex Albon all graduating to Formula 1 at the end of that F2 season.

Having spent three seasons at the back of the grid with Williams, Russell is finally being given the chance to show what he can do with Mercedes, having replaced Valtteri Bottas at the start of 2022.

The 24-year-old picked up the first win of his career last year in Brazil, having dominated the weekend, winning the sprint race as well as the Grand Prix.

Norris is still waiting for his first win however, as McLaren have never quite been able to provide their young star with a car capable of beating the likes of Red Bull.

Legendary former F1 driver Sir Jackie Stewart has now spoken about his love for the young British talent on the grid, revealing his desire for either Russell or Norris to claim their maiden championship victory.

“There’s a wonderful collection of people right now,” he said via The Express.

“We’ve got now in Britain three of the best racing drivers in the world. You’ve got Lewis who’s been winning time after time after time with the unfortunately German car company [Mercedes].

“But that German car company gets all their Formula 1 cars built in [Brackley] because Britain is the capital of technology for motorsport. Our young British racing drivers today, I’d love for one to win the world championship this season. That would be fantastic.”

Having beaten his new teammate Lewis Hamilton in his debut season with Mercedes, George Russell can enter 2023 fairly optimistic about his chances of winning the championship, should the W14 be competitive.

As for Lando Norris, the 23-year-old has been urged to leave McLaren to increase his chances of winning a title, as McLaren continue to be some way away from winning races.

Red Bull have been tipped as potential suitors for the Brit, having previously held talks with Norris about him potentially partnering two-time world champion Max Verstappen.

With Sergio Perez’s contract set to expire at the end of 2024, pundits have suggested that Norris could make the move to Red Bull at the end of that season, should McLaren not be any closer to providing him with a championship winning car.
