George Russell: Wolff Told Me I Will Still Be In F1 Next Year

George Russell said Toto Wolff has told him “I’ve got your back.”

George Russell’s future at Williams has been the subject of much speculation recently, with a source telling Formula1News.co.uk that he will be replaced by Sergio Perez next year.

Although Simon Roberts, Williams’ acting team principal, has been unwilling to confirm George Russell’s seat with the team next season, the Brit has expressed plenty of confidence in his future in Formula One.

Russell believes that Sergio Perez’s management is spreading rumours about him moving to Williams next year in the hopes of pressuring other teams, such as Red Bull, to sign him.

“All of this speculation has probably been fuelled by the Perez camp who are trying to apply pressure on other teams further down the grid. Potentially a Red Bull seat,” Russell said.

The 2018 Formula Two champion also revealed that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has told him he will be on the F1 grid next year.

“He’s said listen, I’ve got your back, and he said you’ll be on the grid next year, so don’t worry.

“Everything will be fine and I’d say 100 percent clarified from the team’s perspective probably no later than the end of next week,” Russell added.
