Mercedes driver George Russell has expressed his surprise and admiration for McLaren’s remarkable improvement in performance.
The team’s recent updates to the MCL60 car have made a significant difference, evident in Lando Norris’s season-best fourth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The pair were narrowly trailing championship leader Max Verstappen, who took another victory, and Lewis Hamilton, who secured a key podium finish for Mercedes.

Russell spoke highly of McLaren’s progress, stating to reporters, “Surprised by them, they’ve done an amazing job.
“Not too sure where all of that performance has come from, even last weekend and their race pace was fast.”
While Russell himself secured a respectable fifth-place finish, Norris and Hamilton’s podium result at Silverstone marked a significant achievement for British drivers in Formula 1.
The last time two British drivers stood on the podium together was in 1999.
Norris’s strong performance also allowed McLaren to secure their first podium at the British Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton’s second-place finish in 2010.

Leaving Silverstone with 12 points, McLaren jumped up to fifth place in the Constructors’ Standings, capitalising on a double DNF from rival team Alpine.
Esteban Ocon was forced to retire from the race on lap ten, having suffered a mechanical issue in his Alpine, while Pierre Gasly’s race ended after a collision with Lance Stroll.
