Gasly Can Become An F1 Champion, Compete With Leclerc & Verstappen – Tost

Tost said the Frenchman could become “one of the big stars of the future.”

Scuderia AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost has tipped Pierre Gasly, who recently took the team’s first win in over a decade, to become a Formula One champion.

“He has the potential to become a champion. I expect that Pierre – if he continues to develop in this way – will be one of the big stars of the future,” Tost said.

Continuing, he said that most people in the paddock consider Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc to be the sport’s champions of the future, “but Pierre is not far away.”

Gasly spent just over half a season with Red Bull Racing in 2019 before he was demoted to Toro Rosso, as the AlphaTauri team was then known.

The Frenchman has been impressive since returning to the Italian team, with him consistently outperforming team-mate Daniil Kvyat and picking up a podium at the 2019 Brazilian GP and winning at Monza just a couple of weeks ago.

However, the team has insisted it is not interested in switching Alex Albon and Gasly around during the 2020 season.

This isn’t necessarily bad news for Gasly, as he has looked far more comfortable at AlphaTauri and their car has proved competitive at some tracks this season.

When asked how strong he expects the team to be at this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix, Tost said, “It is hard to say how well our car will do, the track is totally different from the last few weeks.
