Fernando Alonso throws shade on Esteban Ocon

Fernando Alonso partnered Esteban Ocon at Alpine in 2021 and 2022, and their relationship was turbulent.

Fernando Alonso has thrown shade over former Alpine team-mate Esteban Ocon during a recent video on F1’s official YouTube channel, after participating in the latest episode of ‘Grill the Grid’.

The series puts drivers’ knowledge to the test, with the topic in the most recent video having been race winners.

Each participating driver had two minutes to name a driver who’d won a race, corresponding with each letter of the alphabet.

Unsurprisingly, most of the drivers said Lewis Hamilton for ‘H’ and Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher for ‘S’.

‘O’ though, caused some controversy, as Alonso completely shaded Ocon.

Ocon claimed victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, following a remarkable defensive display by Alonso.

Alonso held up Hamilton for several laps, allowing Ocon to build a big enough lead.

Had Hamilton instantly overtaken Alonso, then he would’ve likely won the race.

When asked to name a racing driver who’d won a race with a surname starting with ‘O’, the two-time World Champion initially looked puzzled, before being given a hint.

“[He] might have been a team-mate of yours” and “French” Alonso was told.

The Spaniard clearly understood suddenly which driver was being hinted to him; however, he smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

 “Pass!” said Alonso.

There is clearly no love lost between Alonso and Ocon since the veteran moved to Aston Martin, with him having often taken shots at the Frenchman.

Alonso has constantly praised Lance Stroll this season and has labelled him as someone who “thinks as a team-mate”.

The Spaniard said this in Azerbaijan, after Stroll opted not to attack Alonso.

Alonso insisted that had it been Ocon as his team-mate, the Alpine driver would’ve done “maybe the opposite”.

The duo’s final blow came at the Brazilian Grand Prix last season, where they made contact twice on the opening lap of the sprint race at Interlagos.

Their coming together caused a lot of friction at the Enstone-based team, with both drivers having been spoken to.

Despite this, Alonso continued to speak very negatively about Ocon to the media.

As of yet, he’s yet to say anything negative about Stroll.
