Fernando Alonso says he wants to be Max Verstappen’s team-mate

Fernando Alonso has revealed he’d love to partner Max Verstappen in the 24 hours of Le Mans, with the Spaniard believing they’d race to victory.

Fernando Alonso has identified the driver he’d like to take on the gruelling 24 hours of Le Mans race with in the hopes of taking another win in the race.

Alonso won the race twice in 2018 and 2019 while taking a break from Formula 1 after a tough few years at McLaren.

Looking at a future entry in the race, the Spaniard believes Max Verstappen would be the perfect partner to take on the challenge, showing his dominance in other areas of motorsports.

Verstappen is currently powering Red Bull’s charge to a second consecutive Constructors’ Championship, having taken three of the five victories so far this season.

Alonso might not have managed to secure his coveted 33rd Grand Prix victory yet but he is also showing an impressive run of form, having secured four podiums in five rounds.

“In the future, for sure, if there is any opportunity [to race at Le Mans with Verstappen],” Alonso said.

“We are very good friends, we are always in contact. I would love to do Le Mans – if I do Le Mans once again – with Max.

“You know that [when] you pass the car [to your team-mates] – when you go to rest – [you are passing it to] the best [drivers], so your car is in the best hands. That would be an honour.”

Verstappen and Alonso have enjoyed a growing friendship this season, sharing jokes post-race and clearly enjoying themselves on the podium.

Even with Alonso the closest non-Red Bull challenger to his title hopes, Verstappen is supportive of the Spaniard, believing he should have won “a lot more races.”

“I would be quite happy to see him win number 33. But I also, in a way, would like to see him win more. So, we’ll see in the coming races,” Verstappen said.
