Fernando Alonso makes big Lance Stroll claim

Fernando Alonso has previously claimed that his new Aston Martin team have the potential to win championships in the near future.

Since signing for Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso has given glowing reviews of everything to do with the team, having spent some of the off-season with them.

The 41-year-old has claimed that the staff working behind the scenes at Aston Martin are some of the most talented that he has ever come across, giving the team the potential to win championships in the near future.

These claims match up with the ambitions of team owner Lawrence Stroll, who has said ever since Aston Martin entered the sport in 2021 that their long-term goal is to be challenging for titles.

Alonso has explained that he would also be happy to watch somebody else win the championship while racing for Aston Martin because this means that all of his hard work during his time with the team will have paid dividends.

The Spaniard has even suggested that his current teammate Lance Stroll could be someone capable of winning a world championship for the team, claiming that he has the raw talent to be able to do so.

“In Lance, the team has a driver who is super young, super talented and has the possibility to be world champion. To see him achieve that and have played a part in that, whether that’s behind the wheel or not, will be special for me,” he said in an official interview with Aston Martin.

“I’ve known Lance for 11 years. We met in 2012 when I was at Ferrari – he was in the Ferrari Academy. And I’ve known his father, Lawrence, for many years. He’s a great friend of mine. I’ve been to his house in Canada a few times, doing different sports and enjoying time together.

“He has the speed, and he has the talent. He has shown it many times, especially in wet conditions. I remember Lance’s pole position in Turkey and some of his other excellent performances in the wet. To perform at that level in difficult conditions you have to have a special feeling with the car.”

Alonso and Stroll came together in a high-speed collision last year at the Circuit of the Americas, but the pair seem to have quickly buried the hatchet of this incident.

Both drivers will be hoping that their team can provide them with a competitive car this season, having ended 2022 positively with Sebastian Vettel behind the wheel.
