F1 2026 Standings: Hamilton Closes In On Championship Lead Ahead Of Belgian GP

Lewis Hamilton’s pursuit of a record-breaking eighth world title is gathering serious momentum as the 2026 Formula 1 season reaches a critical phase.

The 41-year-old has settled comfortably into life at Ferrari, and his first grand prix victory in red at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June marked a significant turning point for both driver and team.

Since that breakthrough win, Hamilton and Ferrari have been steadily closing the gap on championship leaders Mercedes, putting pressure on the Silver Arrows heading into the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

Mercedes’ teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with 179 points, but the gap to his rivals is shrinking with each passing race weekend.

Team-mate George Russell, having finished outside the points at Silverstone, sits second in the standings on 154 points, just 25 behind Antonelli with plenty of racing still to come.

Hamilton himself is third in the standings on 147 points, just 32 points off the championship lead and only seven behind Russell, making him a very real threat to both his Mercedes rivals.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is fourth in the standings on 108 points after claiming his first race win of the season at the British Grand Prix, putting both red cars firmly in the title conversation.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen’s 2026 campaign continues to unravel, with the Red Bull driver crashing out of the British GP and now sitting seventh in the standings on just 76 points.

It is now mathematically impossible for Verstappen to reach the top two in the standings before the summer break, fuelling ongoing speculation about whether he will activate his performance-based exit clause.
