NASCAR star Denny Hamlin has recalled the moment he genuinely feared that Danica Patrick was about to punch him during a fierce pit road confrontation.
The incident took place back in 2015 at Daytona International Speedway, following one of the qualifying races for the iconic Daytona 500.
Patrick, who would later go on to become a pundit for Sky Sports F1 in Britain, was at the time competing in NASCAR with Stewart-Haas Racing.
The confrontation was sparked after contact from Hamlin’s car sent Patrick into a spin and crash with just three laps remaining in the race.
After climbing out of her car, Patrick marched directly toward Hamlin on pit road and grabbed his overalls with both hands before unleashing a furious verbal tirade.
“What are you doing? Seriously!” Patrick raged. “You did the same f*****g thing in practice; you did the same thing. You get on my left rear and it spins me out. You did the same thing.”
Hamlin attempted to keep things calm in the moment, but in a recent interview with The Athletic, he revealed just how tense the situation actually felt from his perspective.
“The Danica thing – that was a serious moment when I saw her stomping toward me,” Hamlin recalled, painting a vivid picture of the high-pressure confrontation.
“I knew I was in it. I didn’t know if she was going to hit me, but I knew I was going to have to be willing to take it. She was coming. She had the brigade right there.”
Hamlin explained that he made the decision to close the distance between them, saying: “I met her halfway between her car and mine. I just remember thinking, ‘Tense up. Tense up, just in case she swings.'”
Fortunately the confrontation never turned physical, but the fiery exchange quickly captured the attention of the entire motorsport world at the time.
The moment remains one of the most memorable flashpoints in recent NASCAR history, showcasing the intense passion and competitive fire that Patrick brought to every race.
