Former Red Bull driver David Coulthard has lifted the lid on a now-famous team radio incident that left him red-faced in front of the team’s late owner.
Coulthard raced for Red Bull between 2005 and 2008, a period the team themselves describe as their building years before consistent competitiveness arrived.
The Scottish driver never managed a grand prix win during his time with the Milton Keynes-based outfit, but remained an important figure within the Red Bull family long after retiring.
Sebastian Vettel replaced Coulthard at Red Bull, and the German went on to win the team’s first race before claiming the world championship in 2010.
Coulthard has since stayed closely connected to the organisation, serving as a global brand ambassador and advisor for the energy drink company to this day.
He recently appeared on the Up to Speed podcast, where the story behind one particularly colourful radio message from the 2007 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim emerged.
The incident involved Coulthard emerging from a pit stop directly behind a Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s sister team now known as Racing Bulls, while on fresher tyres and losing precious time.
“I’ve been in a scenario, if I go way back Hockenheim, probably 2007, where I came out of my pit stop behind the Toro Rosso, as it was at that time, which has now become RB,” Coulthard explained on the podcast.
He recalled growing increasingly frustrated as the Toro Rosso driver refused to move aside despite the two cars being at very different stages of their respective race strategies.
“I was on the radio saying: ‘Let the Toro Rosso know that we’re at different phases of the race,’ and let’s remind ourselves this was not a period where Red Bull Racing or Toro Rosso were scoring points on a regular basis; it was the building years,” Coulthard said.
With no DRS available in that era, Coulthard found himself unable to pass and his frustration boiled over into a string of expletives directed at the entire team over the radio.
“Anyway, they didn’t get out of the way, so I’m on the radio going, ‘You’re w******, you’re all w******!’ To which I found out, Mr. Mateschitz, the owner of Red Bull, was on the radio listening to this,” Coulthard recalled.
The late Dietrich Mateschitz, who founded the Red Bull empire and was a towering presence in the sport, had been listening from the garage throughout the entire exchange.
Rather than reprimanding Coulthard, Mateschitz reportedly held the view that both Red Bull-owned teams should operate independently and compete to rise to the top on their own merits.
“I respect that, and I respect the fact that he therefore didn’t come to me afterwards and say, ‘Don’t ever speak like that on the radio again,'” Coulthard admitted during the podcast.
The rant was not broadcast publicly, but when Coulthard returned to the pit lane, the team made clear they had heard every word of his colourful outburst.
“It wasn’t broadcast. It was just when I got back to the pits. Christian Horner and the team were like, ‘Yeah, thanks for the compliment!'” Coulthard said with characteristic humour.
The anecdote offers a rare and candid glimpse into the internal dynamics of the Red Bull organisation during what was still a formative chapter in their Formula 1 story.
