The Audi Formula 1 team has announced plans to build a new campus near its existing facility in Hinwil, Switzerland, as part of a long-term development strategy.
“Elements of the new Campus on Zurichstrasse became operational in summer 2026, with the full development scheduled for completion in 2030,” the team confirmed in an official statement.
The Hinwil base has deep roots in motorsport history, with Peter Sauber founding his eponymous team there in 1970 before eventually moving into Formula 1 competition.
Sauber ran Mercedes’ sportscar racing programme during the 1980s before making the transition to Formula 1 in 1993, establishing Hinwil as a recognisable name in the paddock.
BMW purchased the team in 2005 before selling it back to Sauber in 2009, leaving the facility in need of considerable investment in the years that followed.
Audi acquired the operation in stages and took full control in January 2025, inheriting a facility that required significant upgrades to both its CFD cluster and wind tunnel.
The wind tunnel at the Wildbachstrasse site carries notable history, having been funded by monies received from Mercedes to release Kimi Raikkonen from his Sauber contract to join McLaren in 2002.
The existing Wildbachstrasse site will be redeveloped, though the wind tunnel will be retained, while Audi’s engine development facility remains in Neuberg and offices continue to operate in Bicester.
The UK satellite facility in Bicester was established specifically to recruit experienced personnel who were unwilling or unable to relocate to Switzerland.
Audi CEO and team principal Mattia Binotto emphasised the importance of the campus to the team’s wider ambitions, saying: “The campus will play an important role in helping us attract and retain world-class talent while providing the foundations required to achieve our long-term ambitions.”
Binotto stressed that the team’s success ultimately depends on the quality of the people it can bring together under one roof.
“Building a successful Formula 1 team is ultimately about people. The best engineers, designers, mechanics and specialists want to work in an environment that allows them to collaborate, innovate and perform at their highest level.”
He highlighted the unique opportunity the project represents, adding: “What makes this project particularly special is that it allows us to shape the future of Audi Revolut F1 Team from the ground up. Opportunities like this are rare in modern Formula 1.”
Binotto also paid tribute to the local authority, stating: “We are proud that the next chapter of Audi Revolut F1 Team will be written in Hinwil and I would like to place on record my thanks to the Municipality of Hinwil itself.”
