The FIA has officially confirmed the circuit configuration for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, designating four distinct Straight Mode activation zones for the race weekend.
Straight Mode replaces the DRS technology used in previous seasons, marking a significant shift in how active aerodynamics are deployed during Formula 1 races.
Under the current regulations, Straight Mode involves adjusting both the front and rear wings simultaneously to reduce drag and extract maximum straight-line speed from the car.
Unlike the old DRS system, Straight Mode is available to all drivers within designated zones regardless of the gap to the car ahead, making it a universal performance tool rather than an overtaking aid alone.
The four zones at Monza have been carefully selected to take full advantage of the circuit’s famous long straight sections, which are among the fastest in the entire Formula 1 calendar.
The first zone covers the main straight running from the start-finish line, while the second runs from the exit of Curva Grande to the entry of Variante della Roggia.
The third zone stretches from after the second Lesmo curve all the way to Variante Ascari, and the fourth covers the run from Ascari’s exit to the entry of the Parabolica.
Alongside Straight Mode, a separate Overtake Mode system has been introduced to further encourage on-track battles between competitors throughout the race.
When a chasing driver comes within one second of the car ahead, they receive an additional 0.5 MJ of electric energy, with the activation point positioned just before the Parabolica.
The leading car’s speed is limited to 290 km/h under this system, while the pursuing driver can unleash a full 350 kW boost, enabling speeds of up to 337 km/h.
Ferrari is reportedly bringing a special engine upgrade known as the ADUO-2 to their home circuit this weekend, specifically designed to maximise the benefits of the new energy deployment modes.
The combination of four Straight Mode zones and the new Overtake Mode system makes Monza a particularly complex strategic battlefield for all ten teams competing this weekend.
With Ferrari’s reported upgrade package tailored to these new regulations, the Scuderia will be hoping to deliver a strong performance in front of their passionate home crowd at the Temple of Speed.
