Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has confirmed that the search for a replacement race engineer is already underway at Red Bull.
The news comes following the confirmed departure of long-serving engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who has signed a deal with McLaren ahead of a 2028 start date.
Lambiase and Verstappen first worked together at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, a partnership that began in stunning fashion with a race victory on debut.
Their working relationship grew into one of the most successful driver-engineer pairings in recent Formula 1 history, contributing to multiple championship campaigns.
McLaren has remained tight-lipped about the specific nature of Lambiase’s new role, but team boss Laurent Mekies confirmed he will take on a leadership position within the organisation.
Lambiase is expected to assist current McLaren team principal Andrea Stella as part of that broader leadership structure.
Speaking to Viaplay, Verstappen revealed he already has candidates in mind from within the Red Bull setup to fill the vacancy left by his long-time engineer.
“It will be a step-by-step process,” Verstappen said. “I have certain people in mind who I think would be perfect for the role.”
The 28-year-old added that discussions are progressing gradually, saying “some of these names are already circulating within the team” but that “it’s still a bit early to make any final decisions.”
Verstappen also acknowledged that Lambiase’s move to a direct rival will inevitably change the nature of their communication as the season progresses.
“It’s only natural that, towards the season’s end, the exchange of information will start to change,” Verstappen explained, noting that “there will eventually be fewer details shared.”
Verstappen appeared philosophical about the situation, suggesting Lambiase himself would understand the gradual reduction in information sharing given his new allegiances.
The departure marks the end of a defining era at Red Bull, with Lambiase’s steady presence having been a cornerstone of the team’s dominant championship runs in recent years.
