Nico Rosberg Follows Lewis Hamilton Into Extreme E

The 2016 F1 Champion has revealed plans to launch an Extreme E team.

Former F1 driver Nico Rosberg has announced that he will be starting his own team to run in Extreme E – a new off-road electric SUV race series.

Rosberg Xtreme Racing (RXR) marks the third team with an F1 Champion as the founder or CEO to join the new environmentally focused series (Lewis Hamilton and Mario Andretti are the other two with teams already).

When asked for his thoughts on the new race series, Nico Rosberg remarked: “Extreme E offers an amazing platform to drive awareness, educate and help tackle climate change through the medium of motorsport.”

Since leaving Formula 1, Rosberg has made it a point to focus on a number of environmental initiatives and this new team is just the latest major endeavour for Nico, who describes himself as a “sustainability entrepreneur.”

While this team launch comes only a month after Lewis Hamilton announced he’d be running a team in the series, Rosberg’s team is not a direct response to compete against his former teammate.

According to Extreme E CEO Alejandro Agag, “We have been talking about this project for many months and we are thrilled he has chosen Extreme E for his formal return to motorsport as founder and CEO of his own racing team.”

Nico Rosberg will not be driving in the available seat on his team, which is required to run both a male and female driver as per series rules.
