Ex-F1 Supremo Warns Mazepin Isn’t A Good Benchmark For Schumacher

Mick Schumacher is well into his debut season in Formula 1, and he has largely outperformed his Haas team-mate, Nikita Mazepin.

However, with him driving the slowest car on the grid, many feel that the 2020 Formula 2 Championship doesn’t have the machinery to show off his talent – and former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes a move could be on the horizon for Schumacher.

Speaking this week, Ecclestone said he believes Schumacher should have partnered Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo for his debut season instead of racing with Haas.

“I would have liked him to go to Alfa Romeo right from the start,” Ecclestone said.

“There he would have had a fast, experienced team-mate in Kimi Räikkönen, who at the same time had a very good relationship with his father.”

Ecclestone also suggested that Scuderia AlphaTauri could be a good move for Schumacher, and he said he believes the young German needs a more competitive car to showcase his talent and develop as an F1 driver.

“I could imagine AlphaTauri as Mick’s next team,” Ecclestone said.

“They do a good job and with Franz Tost they have an experienced man who is very good with young talents.

“Mick doesn’t know where he really stands as a driver in his current team. He simply needs a better, more competitive car.”

Continuing, he said beating his team-mate should be his current priority, but warned that Mazepin isn’t exactly a strong benchmark.

“Every driver wants a better car. He beats his team-mate, and that is the most important thing for every driver at first.

“However, that’s not saying too much with Mazepin. Mick needs a faster team-mate so he knows where he stands,” Ecclestone concluded.
