Hulkenberg: I Would Like To Measure Myself Against Verstappen

Nico Hulkenberg believes he could get within three-tenths of a second of Max Verstappen.

Nico Hulkenberg has impressed many people in the paddock this year when he’s filled in for Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll at Racing Point, and the German is hopeful that he will land a seat on the F1 grid next year.

Helmut Marko, head of Red Bull’s driver development programme, recently suggested that they would be open to considering Nico Hulkenberg or Sergio Perez for the second seat alongside Max Verstappen should Alex Albon “not perform as expected.”

The Austrian also said he doesn’t believe anyone is capable of getting within three-tenths of a second of Verstappen.

Asked if he believes he could meet this target, Nico Hulkenberg replied: “On my very good days, yes.”

Continuing, he said: “In terms of speed, Max is one, if not the fastest and an absolute killer. It is a huge task to have him as a teammate already. I would like to measure myself against him. Let’s see if it will come to that.

“[At the moment] it [Red Bull] is the best option in terms of car performance. That’s a fact. But beyond that, three F1 cockpits are still available,” Hulkenberg added.
